Cognos Query Studio is the reporting tool for creating simple queries and reports in IBM Cognos Business Intelligence.
In Cognos Query Studio, you can
- View data - Connect to a data source to view data in a tree hierarchy. Expand the query subjects to see query item details.
- Create reports - Use the data source to create reports, which you can save and reuse. You can also create a new report by opening an existing report, changing it, and saving it using another name.
- Change the appearance of reports - Improve the layout of your report. For example, you can create a chart, add a title, specify text and border styles, or reorder columns for easy comparison.
- Work with data in a report - Use filters, summaries, and calculations to compare and analyze data. Drill up and drill down to view related information.

To use Cognos Query Studio effectively, you should be familiar with your organization’s business and its data. You may also need to be familiar with other components of IBM Cognos Business Intelligence.

- To open the query studio
- From Cognos home page,
- Click on query my data
- Click on Go Sales and Retailers
This tutorial demonstrates how you can create a list report, a pivot, and a template along with conditional formatting in Query Studio.
Create a list report in - Cognos Query Studio
- Click on the insert data menu
- Drag the product line, product type, product name, quantity, revenue, and drop on the work area/report page
- Select the product line
- From change layout menu,
- Click on the group (Group eliminates the duplicates, automatically calculates subtotals, grand total)
- Ungroup (Restores the duplicates)
- Collapse Group – To suppress the detailed data
- Expand Group – To restore the detailed data
- Select the product line data item
- From change layout menu,
- Click on create sections
- Page breaks (By default 20 rows/page)
List Report
Pivot (Crosstab)
- Create a list report with the following query items
- Product line
- Order method
- Quantity
- Select the product line
- Click on the group icon
- Select any item in the report
- From change layout menu,
- Click on pivot
- Swap rows & columns

Crosstab Report
Conditional Formatting:
- Create a list report with the following query items
- Product line
- Product type
- Quantity
- Select Quantity
- Define conditional styles from change layout
- New value — à 100000
- Click on insert — à 50000
- Click on OK

Template:
The studio has predefined report templates that you select from when you create a new report.
You can create your own custom report templates and make them available too.
- The pre-defined structure can be reused/applied for multiple reports
- Open the report studio,
- Select report template
- Click on OK
- From page explorer,
- Click on classes
- From global class extensions
- Select list column body cell
- Select font property
- Apply the properties
- Select a list column title
- Apply the properties
- Click on save
- Name the template (TCS)

- Select TCS template
- Click on OK
