Microsoft Azure Portal

The Microsoft Azure portal is the place to be in control of in order to effectively manage Azure resources.

Microsoft Azure Portal Pro-Tips

Here's a list of eight beneficial tips, which will surely equip the users with a fair idea about the activities that they can perform on the Microsoft Azure portal.

1. Microsoft Azure Portal - Preview

Microsoft is in the process of continuously improving its Azure portal. Users can get a quick preview of the new offerings Microsoft is developing. This version of the Azure portal changes frequently. So it is recommended to use it carefully, as some of the features may be still unstable.

2. Azure Portal Settings

Apart from the themes, which can be easily changed, there are many more items that can be modified from the Azure portal settings.

To do so, users should click on the gear icon at the top, which displays the portal settings blade.

This is the place where Azure users can change the portal settings, with the liberty to alter those per subscription.

Here, users will come across some interesting features that can occasionally drive the Azure portal a lot faster. Disabling animations and enabling experimental performance settings will hopefully accelerate the portal's speed.

How the numbers and dates are displayed can be also changed from the Azure portal settings. Normally, these settings are set automatically by default in the regional format, but sometimes it needs to be managed manually.

3. Azure Portal Dashboards

Microsoft Azure portal presents a dashboard that can be easily customized.

Users can add and modify items on the dashboard according to their preferences. Usually, users are aware of it, but what is unknown to most is that they can create their own Azure dashboards.

Yes, you heard it right. New dashboards can be created by simply clicking the 'Add Dashboard' icon. The created dashboard, by default, can be only seen by the user.

The new dashboard also has a 'share' feature, but the creator of it can have total control on it by defining the roles, groups, or users who can access the shared dashboard.

4. Keyboard Shortcuts

  • Some people just hate using the mouse! That is why Microsoft has come up with some fabulous keyboard shortcuts specially designed for the Azure portal.
  • Information on keyboard shortcuts can be quickly accessed from the general 'Help Menu' at the portal's top-right corner.

5. Using the Favorites Menu

The Favorites menu can be found on the portal's left side. These are basically resource icons, for instance, App Services, which give quick access. The icons can be rearranged by the user as and when needed. Users can also choose which icons to see when the Favorites Menu is expanded by simply clicking on the star sign beside categories.

6. Automation Script

      • In the Microsoft Azure portal, users have the opportunity to generate automation scripts for every resource, such as a Web Application, a Resource Group, or an Azure SQL Database.
      • Users can create an Azure Resource Manager (ARM) Template, a PowerShell script, a C# code, a Command Line Interface (CLI) script,  or a Ruby script, which would deploy a resource through the ARM.
      • This is an extremely powerful option in case the user needs to automate the resources being deployed.
      • Scripts can be generated for more or less all resources except some resources like an Azure App Service Certificate.

7. Microsoft Preview Portal  in  Azure Meaning

In the Microsoft Azure portal, users can sometimes find the term Preview displayed next to many services. Most users get the impression that the service is available, but this is what Preview exactly means:

The term Preview in the Azure portal, shown at the side of service, doesn’t usually tell anything regarding the service.

It just indicates that the experience is being transferred from the former Azure portal.

8. Deployment to Resource Groups

It has been seen above that templates can be generated from resources, but the Microsoft Azure portal also makes possible for users to see the deployment of resources in various resource groups.

When in an Azure portal, users can see resource deployments in a resource group from the deployments item shown on the menu.

By clicking on the deployments item, users would be able to see all the deployments that have happened to a resource group, with a status report of whether it worked or failed.

Deployments in progress, in case there are any, are also displayed on the Microsoft Azure portal.

Users can dig into particular deployments for specific information, such as the total time taken, and the steps involved in the resource deployment.

From here, Azure portal users can generate a deployment script, or re-deploy a particular deployment.
